All of the staff that work at Peacekeeper
Park's Special Adventure Camps are volunteers -which
means two things; they're there because they genuinely
care about the campers and providing them with a quality
camp; and secondly, it's one of the major reasons we can
keep the costs down to affordable levels. We have
two levels of staffing: the senior or adult level and
the Junior councillors who are closer in age to our
campers. One of our senior councillors is
responsible for each tent group and he/she is assisted
by a junior councillor which helps the campers associate
more closely with staff members.
Our staff come from
varied backgrounds and bring with them a variety of
youth work related skills and experience. Some of
our activities, such as canoeing, air rifle and
abseiling, have specially qualified instructors; staff
who are well trained, certified, and experienced in
their level of expertise in order to ensure the safety
of our campers. Most years we have a registered nurse on site to assist in the
dispensing of prescription medications and to assist the
staff, who are all trained on Emergency First Aid, in
case of small accidents. All senior staff members
must have a pre-camp criminal records check completed
and all are familiar with Non-Violent Crisis Prevention
Intervention procedures and practices. All staff
members must take a four day
pre-camp training course to ensure they are fully
competent in emergency procedures, harassment
prevention, camp content, and assigned responsibilities
and duties.
In 2005 we had a new group of Councillors work with our
campers - Duke of Edinburgh Award Program participants
who were working on their Residential qualifications.
What a tremendous asset they proved out to be - a great
group of young people who helped change the lives of our
campers and who, in turn, had their lives positively
effected by our campers. This tremendous
partnership has continued again andd we really
hope we'll have more in 2010. Well done DOE!
